Blocked Drains in Gymea Bay, Cleared Properly

What's now a settled residential pocket started out as scattered farmland and shacks used by local fishermen, before building activity through the mid-1900s turned it into the low-density streetscape it is today. Brick and brick-veneer is the dominant material along Ellesmere Road and Coonong Road, with pockets of original fibro cottages still standing.

Coonong Creek winds through the area's bushland corridor, and the tree canopy that comes with it keeps root pressure high on any joint in an old clay line nearby.

The ground itself is the other factor. It's a sandstone-and-shale peninsula that tips toward Port Hacking, so anything laid on the lower streets is working against gravity to shift water uphill instead of just letting it fall.

A later round of 1980s subdivision filled in whatever rural land was left with the same style of housing, which is why the pipe stock across the peninsula reads as a fairly even age band despite the range in block sizes.

Three problems keep coming up on this leafy peninsula.

Tree root intrusion. Dense established trees and the bordering bushland reserves make root-blocked lines the single most common call we get here.

Clay pipe drainage. Older detached homes still run original earthenware pipe, brittle enough now that roots and ground movement crack it easily.

Stormwater overload and slope drainage. Gravity does the sorting here: everything that falls on the higher blocks eventually funnels through pipework on the properties below, and a heavy downpour can surcharge that lower section in a hurry.

The combination of slope and mature trees is what makes this pocket distinct from a flatter Shire suburb. A root intrusion on level ground causes a blockage; the same root intrusion on a falling block can also mean a surcharge backs up faster once it starts.

Slope-related surcharge is the other job we're seeing more of. Sydney's heavier storm seasons put more water through the lower streets in a shorter window than the older stormwater infrastructure was ever designed to handle.

We're also fielding more calls on properties near the boat ramp and the North West Arm foreshore, where salt-tinged air off the water adds a slow corrosion factor to external fittings that inland blocks on the same peninsula don't deal with in the same way.
